I. HISTORY

- The Trauma and Orthopedics Center (former: Satellite Department of Binh Dan Hospital) established on May 18, 1985 together with Lower Limb Department.

- The structure in the early stage: Head of Department: Dr. Nguyen Van Quang, Vice Head of Department: Dr. Le Phuc and Dr. Nguyen Van Giap. Head of Nursing Department: Luu Thuong Tuyet, then Tran Thi Binh, and Nguyen Kim Oanh in the next stages.

- Current Head of Department: Dr. Nguyen Quoc Tri Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics; Vice Head of Department: Dr. Tran Dang Khoa Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics. Head of Nursing Department: Trinh Anh Nhut.

- We have 20 surgeons, 26 nurses, 7 attendants and 5 associated surgeons from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and University of Medicine and Pharmacy at HCMC. Currently, there are 13 Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics, 7 Level I Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics and 1 Bachelor of Nursing.

 

II. ACTIVITIES

The Lower Limb Department is a Clinical department specialized in trauma, orthopedic and other lower limb pathologies. Our Department performs all functions and duties of a superior specialized hospital that includes:

- Emergency - Examination - Treatment.

- Human resources training: the Lower Limb Department is a central clinic in terms of training for medical students, residents doctors, Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Level I Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Master Degree and Research Students.

- Science Research: organizing the research for applied clinical topics and the scientific development in lower limb surgery. We achieved many awards including the First Prize of the HCMC Science and Technology Creations  in 2008 and especially had 7 scientific reports in Scientific Conferences in 2011.

-  Direction of techniques for other friend hospitals.

- Prophylaxis: combining  with many friends’s hopsital and Ho Chi Minh  television  as well as newspaper  and magazine in promoting and preventing traumatic injuries that may occur in works, sports, traffic and especially in  preventing femoral neck fracture and osteoarthritis in older people.

- International cooperation.

- Economics management.

- The Lower Limb Department is a clinical department that implements practices about the lower limb's trauma, pathology and sequels, mainly by surgical procedures for preservation and physiotherapy treatments.

 

III. ACHIVEMENTS

- The number of patients increase yearly and the quality of treatment is progressively better have created a prestigious brand name for the Department and the Hospital.

HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

The Lower Limb Department  is one of the first places perform total hip replacement and total knee replacement  in Vietnam.

After over 20 years of growth, we continue to develop our strengths with well-training and high standards, to become one of the strongest departments within Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital that highly valued by foreign and domestic enterprises with continuous quality improvement.

 

Specifically, the total number of  hip and knee replacements are 1,413 in 5 years from 2005 to 2009. On the other hand, that number was 2,953 in 5 years from 2010 to 2014 which has doubled in contrast with the last 5 years.

 

KNEE ARTHROSCOPY SURGERY

The Lower Limb Department is also one of the first places perform knee arthroscopy surgery in Vietnam.

There are anterior  cruciate ligament  reconstruction, posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal  tear repair, etc. We did only 525 cases before 2005; however, the total cases were 1,685 from 2005 to 2009  that have increased approximately three times in contrast to the previous 5 years.

 

ANKLE ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY

Since 2010, The Lower Limb Department has developed ankle arthroscopy surgery for the treatments of relevant pathologies such as ankle instability, subchondral dissecan, ankle impingement, etc. After nearly 7 years, we achieved many positive results that lead to the increase in number of patients.

 

OSTEOSYNTHESIS

The Lower Limb Department was a pioneer in terms of applying the most modern and advanced techniques, creates the efficiency in the treatments for traumatic-lower limb patients.

For example, less invasive surgery or Hip and Pelvic surgery, etc. Our surgeons are always appreciated by both foreign and domestic colleagues, not only for expertising but also in the level of skillful works.

In current years, we accomplish hundreds of treatments per day and is recognized as a top place to help Vietnamese patients reduce their pain caused by traffic accidents or occupational accidents.

 

Technological Technique Transfer

We are specialists in lower limb who have ambition and enthusiasm come to everywhere in all over the country  to share our knowledge and experience about arthroscopic as well as joint replacement technique for friends’ hospital such as Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai, Long An, Tien Giang, Can Tho, Ben Tre, etc. We also instruct them how to do  minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis technique with the  hope that the every hospitals in Viet Nam can serve patients better.

We participate in teaching medical students coming from University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and other medical schools and especially in tranning Orthopedic surgeons that come from many different provinces  in Viet Nam for instance: Ha Noi, Phu Tho, Quang Ninh, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Tuyen Quang, Nghe An, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, BInh Duong, Dong Nai, Long An, Tien Giang, Can Tho, etc. Not only do they learn theory, but they also would be clinically guided when they come to practice at the Department.

 We also send our specialists to some hospitals requiring exactly technique what they can not do without our help. Our surgeons will do surgery there and show them how to  do that technique until they can do by themselves. In some cercumstances we also teach and consult via phone and internet.

International Co-operation

Specifically cooperating with the Operation Walk United States organization to do free surgeries such as total knee and total hip replacement 2 times for 103 poor patients (130 joints), eventually, it was extremely successful.

Oversea training: Our specialists are sent every year to attend seminars, conferences and abroad trainings in South Korea, America or Australia, etc.

Domestic training: We organize 2 - 4 training courses of Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement  annually with a lot of famous professors coming from America, Australia, UK, Germany, South Korea, India, Singapore, Thailand, etc.

Teaching: clinical training for medical students, General Doctors, Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Level I Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Master and research students in University of Medicine and Pharmacy  at Ho Chi Minh city, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Military Medical II University, Medical secondary school, etc.

Scientific Research:

- Fifty eight percent of 3.783 patients suffering from femoral neck fracture get excellent results  during 20 years follow-up.

- Projects of following patients who underwent Hip and knee replacement surgeries

- Projects of treatment in internal and external fixation of lower limb fractures

- Projects of Arthroscopic ACL and PCL reconstruction. The research of treatment methods in ACL reconstruction and meniscus tear due to sport injuries has won the first prize in Scientific and Technological Creativity Competition in 2008 in Ho Chi Minh city. Furthermore, it was selected to print in “Impression in 35 years’’ of Ho Chi Minh city General Confederation of Labor, Hanoi Labor Publishing 2010.

Development Goals 2015 - 2020:

We comply the regulation of hospital, excellently complete quota and especially do saving as well as  avoid losing hospital fees, complications and inconveniences for patients.

In treatment, improving the methods:

+ Non-operative treatment in Avascular Necrosis Femoral Head

+ Plaster cast technique in conservative  treatment of  lower limb fractures.

+ Advanced development of lower limb surgeries: hip and pelvic surgeries, knee and ankle joint surgeries.

+ High technology development such as improving Knee and Hip Replacement Technique and applying Arthroscopy technique such as knee ligament reconstruction, ankle Joint, hip joint, etc. to build brand name and reputation for Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopaedics.

+ Trainning all surgeons in advanced by organizing and attending some  short-term and long-term cousres . Particularly, encourage them to study Level II Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedics and PhD . Participating in teaching medical students and doctors. Participating in scientific research at hospital level and nation level.

+ International cooperation in the field of professional development, especially in high technology like Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement technique.

+ Establishing Sport Medicine  units, Foot and Ankle unit
