A. History:

The An Binh Satellite Department (VTAB), launched in July 2012, has 93 beds, is the first satellite department of Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics in Ho Chi Minh City (BV CTCH), 929 Tran Hung Dao, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City. VTAB is located within An Binh Hospital, 146 An Binh, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City. One of the tasks of VTAB is to reduce the burden on CTCH. Patients of CTCH are transferred to VTAB for pre- and post-surgery care. Surgery is performed at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital and An Binh Hospital.

B. Department leaders through the periods:

1. From 04.7.2012 to 29.7.2012:

- Dr. Tran Thanh My: Head

- Dr. Huynh Manh Nhi: Deputy Head

- Nguyen Van Hong: Chief nurse

2. From 30.7.2012 to 31.8.2014:

- Dr. Tran Thanh My: Head

- Dr. Huynh Manh Nhi: Deputy Head

- Dr. Pham Quang Tuyen: Deputy Head

- ICU Chief Nurse Ho Van Chinh: support the management of nurses and caregivers of VTAB from 30.7.2012 to 30.8.2012.

3. From 01.9.2014 up to now:

- Dr. Huynh Manh Nhi: Deputy Head

- Dr. Pham Quang Tuyen: Deputy Head

C. Current Human Resources:

- 11 doctors (3 fixed, 6 rotated and 2 trainers)

- 21 nurses (16 formal staff and 5 trainees)

- 3 caregivers

D. Professional activities:

VTAB has the following activities:

1. Preoperative and postoperative treatment for patients with limb fractures; meniscal, ACL and PCL injuries and spine diseases.

2.  Booking surgery appointment for patients in remote areas. Patients only need to be admitted a day or two before surgery if their past medical history is healthy and their operations are simple.

3. Patients with postoperative complications from other hospitals: the surgeons would discuss in details. 

4. Patient are stable after surgery could be referred to their local healthcare facilities. 

5. Children with clubfoot will be received for serial castings, percutaneous tenotomy and bracing until 5 years of age. Clubfoot children can be admitted to VTAB to receive health insurance support for room payments, casts and tenotomy. Families only pay for meals and braces.

6. To train clubfoot staff to treat clubfoot with simple Ponseti method that is highly effective and sustainable. In 2013-2014, there are 3 doctors trained: Dr. Vo Hoang Quoc, Bong Son Hospital, Binh Dinh Province; Dr Nguyen Thanh The, Phuoc Long District Hospital, Bac Lieu Province; Dr. Truong Thi Xuan Thuy, Phu Yen Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, students in nursing, physical therapy and traditional medicine at An Binh Hospital also know about clubfoot to conduct the correct counseling for the new babies’ families.
